WOMEN'S SOCCER: Canada vs Germany, Former, current hosts meet in Women’s International Friendly

Former, current hosts meet in Women’s International Friendly

13 June 2013
Germany, two-time champions and hosts of the last FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2011, will welcome Canada on 19 June 2013 for a Women’s International Friendly match in Paderborn, Germany. The match will be played at Benteler Arena, with broadcasts on Sportsnet One in Canada and on ARD in Germany.
Germany is preparing for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013, which starts on 10 June in Sweden and will serve as the last major women’s competition in the region before FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 Qualifiers kick off in September. Ahead of Canada on 19 June, Germany will host Scotland on 15 June in Essen (with broadcast by ZDF).
As for Canada, it is of course making early preparations for the big tournament it will host in just under two years time, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. The match against Germany (who were champions in 2003 and 2007) follows the recent Women’s International Friendly match against two-time Olympic champions USA on 2 June (who were also FIFA Women’s World Cup champions in 1999).

Through this year’s preliminary rounds in Europe and Asia, 24 teams have competed in FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 Qualifiers, with eight teams still in the hunt and 16 teams eliminated. In all, 36 matches have been played in six different countries.
