UEFA EURO 2012: Angry Italian GK Gianluigi Buffon: “I don’t celebrate second place, I was angry, because we should have avoided those last five minutes of sufferance. We need to be mature. Football is a game, but when you reach the semifinals of a European Championship it’s not a game any more”

WARSAW—If there’s anyone still wondering what Italy’s intentions are at this European Championship, they need look no farther than Gianluigi Buffon’s angry reaction after the Azzurri’s semifinal win over Germany.
While his teammates celebrated, Buffon could not look past the way Italy allowed a penalty kick in injury time of a 2-1 win, plus a few other chances for Germany that could have sent the match to extra time.
“I don’t celebrate second place,” Buffon said after Thursday’s match. “I was angry, because we should have avoided those last five minutes of sufferance. We need to be mature. Football is a game, but when you reach the semifinals of a European Championship it’s not a game any more.”
One of the pillars of Italy’s 2006 World Cup victory, Buffon can add another trophy with a win over Spain in Sunday’s final, which will mark his 120th appearance in the Azzurri shirt.
With more than a decade as the Azzurri’s starting goalkeeper, Buffon’s experience and talent has been evident throughout this tournament — especially in the last two matches.
Against England in the quarter-finals, his reflex save to deny Glen Johnson five minutes in set the tone for the match. He later saved Ashley Cole’s spot kick in the penalty shootout, setting up Alessandro Diamanti’s winning strike.
Against Germany, Buffon swatted away a long shot from Sami Khedira a minute before Mario Balotelli doubled the lead in the first half, then leaped to push a free kick from Marco Reus off the bar just after the hour mark.
However, as Italy sat back and attempted to preserve its lead, the Azzurri defence began to struggle and Federico Balzaretti used his arm to block a shot from Miroslav Klose, setting up Mesut Oezil’s penalty with a few minutes remaining in extra time.
“If by luck it got to 2-2, who knows, we could have lost the match on penalties,” Buffon said. “We still need to improve. There are young players who need to learn this. You can’t play with fire.”
Buffon came under attack after it was revealed the week before Italy departed for the tournament that he made large payments to the owner of a tobacco shop in Parma that is also a betting parlour.
While he has not been charged with any wrongdoing, the revelations shook the Azzurri camp, as defender Domenico Criscito was almost simultaneously cut from the squad after being placed under investigation for match-fixing.
“Coming here to Poland and contemplating playing a semifinal was unthinkable,” Buffon wrote on his Facebook page before the Germany match. “But we believed, we wanted it and every sacrifice was made in view of pursuing our objective.”
At 34, Buffon helped lead Juventus to the Serie A title last month, the club’s first title since before the 2006 match-fixing scandal relegated the team to Serie B.
“As a small child I dreamed of becoming a footballer, as a kid I dreamed of becoming the national team and Juventus goalkeeper. At about 20 I wanted to win the scudetto (Serie A title), at 25 the Champions League and the World Cup and at 30 win the scudetto with Juve again and the Euros,” Buffon wrote. “I’ve reached most of the goals I’ve set for myself, although there’s still something missing...”

The Canada-USA match kicks off at noon local at the Rio Tinto Stadium, just south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Canada-USA match will be broadcast by NBC in the USA. Canadian fans can see this live broadcast in on Sportsnet ONE, with a scheduled start time of 13.30 ET / 10.30 PT. For the match, Canada will wear its centennial blue kits to commemorate the Canadian Soccer Association's 100th anniversary.
USA and Canada finished one-two at the 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver, BC. The two CONCACAF teams will compete in the London 2012 Olympics from 25 July to 9 August. USA is in a group with France, Colombia and Korea DPR while Canada is in a group with Japan, South Africa and Sweden. The other women's group features Great Britain, Brazil, Cameroon and New Zealand. USA is the defending Olympic champion from Beijing 2008 while Japan is the reigning FIFA Women's World Cup champion from Germany 2011.
Already in 2012, Canada has posted a record of nine wins and three losses in 12 international matches. Canada posted four wins and one loss at the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament in January, with only a defeat to USA in the championship final. More than 20,000 fans were in attendance for Canada's last two matches at BC Place, a 3:1 win over Mexico in the semi-final (to qualify for the Olympics) and a 0:4 loss to USA in the final.
Canada's most recent international match was a 1:0 victory over China PR on 30 May 2012. Diana Matheson and goal-scorer Christine Sinclair combined for the added-time winning goal in the 93rd minute at Stade Moncton 2010 Stadium.
Canada's rivalry with USA extends back to July 1986 when the two nations played a pair of international matches at the North American Cup in Blaine, MN (as part of the Sons of Norway annual youth tournament). USA won the first match on 7 July and Canada won the second match on 9 July. Most recently in 2011 international matches played in USA, the two sides drew 1:1 in Kansas City on 17 September before USA won 4:0 in Portland, OR on 22 September.
From the goal out, Canada's current squad features Sabrina D'Angelo, Karina LeBlanc and Erin McLeod as goalkeepers, Emily Zurrer, Melanie Booth, Carmelina Moscato, Robyn Gayle, Rhian Wilkinson, Candace Chapman, Marie-Eve Nault and Lauren Sesselmann as defenders, and Kaylyn Kyle, Diana Matheson, Desiree Scott, Christine Sinclair, Sophie Schmidt, Melissa Tancredi, Kelly Parker, Jonelle Filigno, Brittany Timko and Chelsea Stewart from the midfield up through to the attack.

UEFA EURO 2012: Super Mario Balotelli on target to finish as top scorer

KYIV—He put Italy in the European Championship final. He shamed the morons who have been making monkey noises at him because he is black. And he salvaged the honour of Europe’s strikers, by making sure these Euros didn’t set a new record for goal-scoring sterility. In short, self-proclaimed genius Mario Balotelli had an outstanding night to finally match his nickname, Super Mario.
Euro 2012 had had 260 minutes of football without a goal — with 0-0 draws in two consecutive matches that went into extra time — before the Italian striker thumped his header past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, the first of two goals he scored in Thursday’s semifinal to put the Azzurri into their first European Championship final since 2000.
The longest stretch without a goal at the Euros was in 1996, according to tournament organizers UEFA. Vladimir Smicer scored for the Czech Republic in the 88th minute against Russia. The tournament then waited 262 minutes — through 0-0 quarter-final draws between France and Netherlands and England vs. Spain — until Juergen Klinsmann ended the drought with a penalty for Germany against Croatia in the 20th minute of their quarterfinal at Old Trafford.
When Balotelli scored Thursday night in the 20th minute, wriggling free of marker Holger Badstuber to head home Antonio Cassano’s cross, these Euros were within a hair’s breadth of setting a new goal-drought record. In short, the Italian spared a few blushes of embarrassment for Europe’s current crop of strikers, the big men like him that teams look to for goals but who have been somewhat off-colour at this tournament.
There have been plenty of goals — 72 in total, including the two by Balotelli in Italy’s 2-1 semifinal defeat of Germany, a squad packed with talent that is slowly earning an unwanted reputation as chokers, because here and at the 2010 World Cup they fell in the semifinal and lost the 2008 European Championship final to Spain.
But many Euro 2012 goals haven’t been scored by the players one might expect, the star forwards like Balotelli.
Mario Gomez, the German striker with three goals at Euro 2012, had a shocking night against Italy, and was pulled off by coach Joachim Loew at halftime.
Cristiano Ronaldo was impressive for Portugal in the quarterfinal against the Czech Republic and in the group stage against the Netherlands, finding the net three times. But his scoring touch deserted him in the semifinal against defending champions Spain, one of the matches that had to be decided on penalties after 120 minutes with extra time finished 0-0. The other was Italy’s quaterfinal with England.
France’s Karim Benzema, prolific alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid, never got off the mark at Euro 2012. Neither did Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. And his Netherlands teammate, Premier League top scorer Robin van Persie, went home with just one goal. England’s Wayne Rooney was a flop, too. Even Balotelli has been erratic here. Against Spain in Italy’s first match, he was one-on-one against Iker Casillas but then slowed almost to a stop, allowing defender Sergio Ramos to tackle him before he could shoot past the Spanish ‘keeper and captain.
Balotelli said in a magazine interview before Euro 2012 that scoring is a question of willpower.
“When I decide to score, I will score,” he told France Football. That was the same interview where he declared, “Yes, I think I am a genius.”
There was certainly a touch of genius in both Italian goals on Thursday at the National Stadium in Warsaw. For the first, Andrea Pirlo delivered one of the laser-like passes he is famous for from deep in the Italian half, Giorgio Chiellini chested it down on the Italian left wing and passed to Cassano, who then wriggled past two German defenders to deliver the pass that Balotelli jumped for and sent goalward with his shaved head that is decorated with a thin Mohican-style strip of hair down the middle.
For the second, Balotelli took a long pass from Riccardo Montolivo, chested it down, knocked it forward and then hammered the ball before Philipp Lahm could tackle him. Neuer could only watch, rooted to the spot, as Balotelli’s right-footed strike curved past into his net. Mesut Oezil scored Germany’s goal, from a penalty.
Balotelli doesn’t like to celebrate his goals. “When I score I don’t celebrate, because I’m doing my job,” he said before the semifinal against Italy. “When the postman delivers your letter, does he celebrate?”
But he celebrated this time, shaking his blue shirt with fury after his first goal and then ripping it off after his second and clenching his muscular arms and torso like a bodybuilder. For that, the referee gave Balotelli a yellow card.
Balotelli also scored with a superb strike against Ireland. He now has a total of three goals, the highest total of any player still at Euro 2012.
Super Mario, indeed.

TORONTO CENTRAL WOMEN'S SOCCER:

June 28, 2012 - tonight results:

TSCL WOMEN'S SOCCER:

Genesis won the clash of leaders 3-0 against Majestic, in a very intense game. The first half was balance for both team, but Genesis got 1-0 advantage by a solitary goal by Carol "Shay" Knibbe, who run without anybody being able to stop her. The light blue rivals had some opportunities in the feet of Kristyn Bacon and Cindy, but the GK and defense of the red team were able to stop them.

With more subs that Majestic (almost a full new team), the second period was dominated by Genesis. Still, Bacon hit the post once and brought a lot of danger to the red GK. However, in a great goal by Alora Walcott and another by Knibbe, the 3-0 was imposible to surpass.

Ballers 3, Bulldogs 0: the Celtics-coloured team surprised the black team led by Danielle Wedge and Karen Cross. Due to the Italy victory at Euro 2012 and celebration on St. Clair Ave. W., Ballers started only with 7 players, but little by little, when all the players arrived, were able to score 3 times through Jenna Hummings and Rebecca, and finally win the match.

Bulldogs could score one goal in a penalty kick shot by Karen Cross, however the GK stopped the first attempt from the 18 yeards and she immediately saved the rebound by the usually effective striker.
