2012 All Stars: Draws across the board in U-16 Girls day two play
The first game of day two U-16 group play featured a hungry Team Atlantic side taking on a solid Alberta side. Both teams had their share of chances with Alberta having the majority in the first half, but couldn’t put one past Team Atlantic’s keeper, Claire West.
Taking advantage of the phenomenal performance by West, Team Atlantic came out with one mission in the second half, to get the three points needed to join Ontario at the top of Group B. Unfortunately for them, Alberta’s keeper, Kailey Harder, decided to put on a show as well and turned away everything that sent in her direction, including an absolute flurry of chances in the 45th minute.
This 0:0 draw forces the Atlantic team to produce a result in Friday’s match against Ontario if they want to advance to the Gold medal game. Tomorrow’s rest day gives the Atlantic side a great opportunity to regroup and focus on the task at hand.
Once again the evening match did not disappoint, with Group A leading Québec facing a competitive Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan side.
Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan came out strong early in the first half and kept Québec keeper Kelly Chiavaro on her toes. However, it didn’t take Québec long to organize and begin their counter attack. Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan’s keeper, Madison Wilford held the game to 0:0 after the first half with some spectacular saves.
The second half began much like the first with Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan creating opportunities early but couldn’t maintain the momentum throughout the half. Québec countered again and pushed for the majority of the half, but once again without any results.
The 0:0 draw puts Québec at the top of Group A with four points but leaves the door open for Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan, as a win by two or more goals in Friday’s match against British Columbia would put them through to the Gold medal game.
The crossover match today featured British Columbia taking on Ontario to a 1:1 draw. British Columbia’s Sessen Stevens didn’t waste any time netting a goal in the 2nd minute of play. Ontario countered with one of their own in the 22nd minute, scored by Veronica Bosco.
2012 All Stars: Québec and Ontario secure early lead in U-16 group play
The opening match in U-16 Girls group play turned out to be a shootout, with a total of nine goals being scored.Ontario took and early lead, with goals by Ashley Moreira in the 2nd minute and Veronica Bosco in the 6th minute. Alberta quickly decided to take action and even things up with two quick goals of their own.
By the time half rolled around Ontario had a 4-3 lead, but Alberta wasn’t going to sit back.
Opening the second half in style was Alberta’s Natalie Arnett who netted her third goal of the game, putting her in an early lead for the tournament’s coveted Golden Boot Award.
Ontario’s Isabella Habuda ended up putting away the game winner in the 52nd minute. The match concluded on a 5:4 win from Ontario over Alberta.
The tournament’s first match under the lights did not disappoint as Québec and British Columbia took the pitch to determine who was going to get the first three points in Group A.
After a 0-0 first half, Québec came out a different team and dominated possession, pinning British Columbia in their end.
Margerie Langlois scored an absolute cracker from the top of the 18 yard box to put her Québec side up 1-0 in the 52nd min.
Québec’s Kateri Rivard continued the pressure, generating many chances up the middle with some fantastic runs.
The chances continued for Québec as speedy Gabriella Cuerno made a run down the wing in added time but her strike was turned away by a diving British Columbia keeper Priya Sandhu.
Quebec’s goal held in the end, posting a final score of 1:0, and earned the team three points in group play.
The U-16’s crossover match saw Team Atlantic dominate Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan and saw goals by Jill MacDonald, Akindoju Sope and Chloe Brennan in the 3:0 win.

The Ontario Cup, the Provincial Soccer Championship, is the largest competition of its kind in Canada, and is The Ontario Soccer Association’s flagship property.
The Ontario Cup is one of the oldest sporting events in Canada, first staged in 1901 and operated continuously since that date (with the exception of World War 2).
The Ontario Cup involves close to 12,000 athletes, from Windsor’s Roselands to Thunder Bay’s Sleeping Giant, from the Nation’s Capital to Niagara Falls.
The competition commences in May, with over 660 teams being drawn into either a Knock-Out round or a Round-Robin style tournament, leading to a pre-determined set of venues throughout the Province for the Semi-Finals held in August.
It culminates with the Final Round at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan, with the added prize of a National Club Championship in the Under 14's, Under 16's, Under 18's, Men’s and Women’s divisions.
BOYS
2012 All Stars: Québec, Alberta bounce back with big wins in U-16 Boys
Alberta rebounded from an opening day loss to Ontario with a 4:0 thumping of Team Atlantic in Mt. Pearl, NL on 18 July. The victory came on the second day of the 2012 All Stars U-16 Boys competition.Elva Cannigia bagged a hat-trick for the Albertans to lead the way to victory, while Aymar Sigue chipped in with the fourth goal.
Goalkeeper Dylan Pawley posted the clean sheet for the successful Albertan side.
In the division’s second match of the day in Mount Pearl, Québec duplicated Alberta’s earlier feat by dispatching Team MB/SK by a score of 4:0, too.
Heikel Jarras opened the scoring for Québec before El Mehdi Ibn Brahim added a brace. The victory was then capped off with a 22-yard wonder-strike from substitute Genaro Silvan Vigo.
Québec goalkeeper Marc-Antoine Chaudry picked up the clean sheet with a strong performance.
“I think the most important thing was our performance, rebounding from our loss in the first game of the tournament,” said Phillip Dos Santos, Québec U-16 coach. “I think our young squad reacted well and brought their strongest effort today.”
The score line was harsh on Team MB/SK who competed well throughout the match. Coach Mick Gale was full of praise for his boys.
“I was really proud,” said Gale after the match. “I pulled one of them off five minutes before the end just so the others could give him a standing ovation. It was a really good performance.”
In the morning’s crossover friendly match, Ontario and British Columbia battled to a 0:0 draw.
2012 All Stars: Québec U-15 books place in final
Québec booked its place in Saturday’s U-15 tournament final with a 4:1 win over Team Atlantic at King George V Park in St. John’s, NL. Québec's win came on the second day of the 2012 All Stars U-15 Boys tournament on 18 July.It was Team Atlantic who struck an early lead courtesy of a cool right-footed finish by Jacob Bolton in the 27th minute but Québec stormed back with a string of four unanswered goal to steal the game away from the hosts.
David Choinière struck a magnificent off-the-bar and-in free kick to pull Québec level in the first half before Claudio Dizzaco, Luca Ricci and Joe Lipari scored three goals in six minutes in an impressive second half performance by the Québécois.
“The first half was difficult for us because Team Atlantic were physical strong and quick defensively,” said John Limniatis, Québec U-15 coach. “In the second half we showed our superior talent, but even if the 4:1 win sounds like a comfortable result - I can tell you that it was not easy.”
Team Atlantic Head Coach Younes Bouida was seen consoling his players after the match and urging them to be proud of their performance.
“It was a good, competitive match,” said Bouida. “In the first half we put a lot of pressure on them but you have to give them credit for a good second-half performance. They have some good players.”
The loss eliminates Team Atlantic from contention for Saturday’s final.
The U-15 action continued into the afternoon at King George V Park in St. John’s with Team MB/SK battling British Columbia to a 1:1 draw.
BC took a first-half lead courtesy of Christian Nichele’s goal in the 27th minute and appeared on-course for victory but Team MB/SK’s Alex Hein snatched a late equalizer to level the match in the dying minutes.
The loss ends British Columbia’s hopes of reaching the tournament final, while Team MB/SK will now need to upset Ontario in its final group match to stake a spot in Saturday’s U-15 showdown.
“It was a great game to watch and I thought both team competed and fought really hard,” said Hayden Sloan-Seale, Team MB/SK U16 coach. “In the end we are a little bit disappointed because we felt we could have stolen the win in the second half.”
Despite losing a second consecutive match, BC coach Christopher Cerroni was impressed with his team’s progress in which they improved on their opening day performance.
“I was very pleased, I think the boys learned from what we didn’t do well against Ontario,” said Cerroni. “A lot of these players will go on to knock on the door of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC academy and others will have the option of pursuing their careers in a university setting.”
In the day’s friendly cross-over match, Ontario defeated Alberta 2:0 in Mt. Pearl, NL.
