CSA 2012 All Stars: Québec U-16 Girls take gold in penalties

Championship Saturday did not disappoint as heavyweights Ontario and Québec squared off in an epic match to decide who was going home with gold medals around their neck.
Both teams exchanged chances with keepers Miranda Horn (ON) and Kelly Chiavaro (QC) standing their ground time after time and the game went to half with tied 0-0.
Much of the same occurred in the second half and as the game progressed still in a 0-0 draw, both benches were extremely tense as balls continued to go through the 18 yard box.
The game ended in a draw which then meant that the Gold medal would have to be decided by kicks from the penalty mark.
Québec and Ontario were both successful on their first penalties but then the third Québec penalty just went wide and opened the door for Ontario.
Both teams exchanged penalties until Chiavaro chose right and brought the count back to three a piece.
The next set of penalties decided the match as Québec’s Kateri Rivard blasted one past Horn and Ontario’s attempt sailed over the net, which put the Gold medal around Québec’s players’ necks.
The Québec side swarmed Chiavaro after it was all over, as her stop in kicks from the penalty mark gave them the swing in momentum they needed.
British Columbia and Alberta played for the bronze medal in an extremely competitive game.
British Columbia had the majority of the chances in the first half but it was a perfectly placed Alberta corner that allowed Mackenzie Bellows to beat Priya Sandhu, British Columbia’s keeper and take the lead.
Sandhu gave British Columbia the chance to come back in the second half by making save after save, including an absolute gem in the 17th minute when Alberta Striker, Kaitlyn Lomsnes, broke in alone and forced Sandhu to react quickly.
Alberta was able to lock up the Bronze medal with a goal in the 50th minute, after a successfully defended corner resulted in a fast break to Lomsnes, whom sped past the British Columbia defenders and put one past the keeper to seal the 2:0 win.
The 5th place game featured Team Atlantic and Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan. Team Atlantic came out strong, holding a large percentage of the possession in the first half.
Jessica Shaffelburg was able to net Team Atlantic’s first goal in the 6th minute, this held till half time.
Much the same occurred in the second half with Emily Bailey putting in Team Atlantic’s second goal, with a sneaky little chip over into the far top corner of the net.
Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan’s Amanda Wong was able to get one past Team Atlantic’s keeper, Claire West, in the 59th minute. Unfortunately, it was too little too late with Team Atlantic holding on to the 2:1 victory and taking 5th place.
