GTA HEAT ALERT: Toronto’s high of 34 C this afternoon will feel more like 40 C with the humidity. In Timbuktu on the edge of the Sahara Desert, the heat will only reach 38 C

Ever wonder what it’s like to live in the Sahara Desert? Yes or no, you’ll find out today.
Toronto’s high of 34 C this afternoon will feel more like 40 C with the humidity. In Timbuktu on the edge of the Sahara Desert, the heat will only reach 38 C.
Yesterday, I witness an atrocity regarding this week's Toronto and Ontario heat alert. A soccer team,, Under 14 or 16 (it seems to be  Toronto Eagles / SC Toronto rep youth) was exposed to extreme heat at 43 Celsius humidex and the coaches didn't even bother to stop the practice, risking the players to heat stroke, dehydration and other injuries and illnesses. It supposed to be taught that heat warning courses and game advisory from the Ontario Soccer Association, Canadian Soccer Association and Coaches's Association of Ontario.
The muggy heat in Toronto this afternoon is expected beat temperatures in Honolulu, Miami, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Havana.
But don’t sweat it. The city will open up “cooling centres” – air-conditioned oases with water and light snacks – in light of the extreme heat alert. In addition, many city pools will extend their hours to help Torontonians cool off.
Environment Canada issued an advisory this morning, warning of humidex values over 40 for all of southern Ontario.
People are advised to stay in air-conditioned spaces, seek shade, drink plenty of water and limit physical outdoor activity.
The advisory notes that night-time temperatures are expected to hold at around 22 C.
The highest temperature on the books for June 20 in Toronto is 34.4 C, reached in both 1949 and 1988. The lowest temperature recorded was from a chilly 3.3 C day in 1940. The most rainfall recorded was 14.4 mm in 2009.
Tomorrow is expected to be another hot day, but thunderstorms from the mid-afternoon into the evening may provide some relief.
Environment Canada says a cold front arriving Friday should break the heat and humidity.
