If a report from out of Spain stating that Benito Floro will become the next head coach of the Canadian men's soccer team is any indication, then it has been worth the wait
If patience is a virtue, then the soccer gods are surely smiling on Canada today.

For months, the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) has been telling reporters that they are in no rush to replace their men's head coach.

After the previous head coach, Stephen Hart, fell on his sword following a disastrous exit in World Cup qualifying, the CSA has spoken openly and often about the benefits of not rushing into the next hire.

"It's obviously the top priority on our list. But [CSA general secretary] Peter [Montopoli] and I do not see any urgency," CSA president Victor Montagliani told the CBC in May.

If a report from out of Spain stating that Benito Floro will become the next head coach of the Canadian men's team is any indication, then it has been worth the wait.

The CSA was officially not commenting Thursday in response to the report, but a CSA source confirmed that it was accurate.

The downtown Toronto hotel where the CSA is slated to make a major announcement on Friday was also nice enough to confirm that Floro would be checking in at 3 p.m. Thursday.

An incredible coincidence? Unlikely. The hiring of Floro is exactly in line with what the CSA has been hinting at since Hart's departure.

"I think one of the things we're looking for is obviously someone with international experience ..." Montagliani told the CBC previously.

Floro has held management roles at Real Madrid and Valencia. He has a coaching track record that dates back to the late 1970s.

"... We want somebody that has a proven track record ..."

Floro won a Spanish Cup (Copa Del Rey) with Real Madrid in 1992. He also won the Spanish Super Cup the following year.

"... But also experience working in environments that are very similar to what we face here in World Cup qualifying -- when we go to Honduras, Costa Rica and places like Mexico."

Floro has coached at C.F. Monterrey, a Mexican club, which recently won the CONCACAF Champions League. He has also coached at Barcelona S.C. -- an Ecuadorian club side that competes in CONMEBOL.

Perhaps the most telling quote of this whole process also came from Montagliani when he spoke about their commitment to their cause.

"I can only speak to the time I've been at the CSA, but we've never, ever done a search and due diligence to this depth when looking for a coach. We know we need to get it right."

If Floro is what they mean by getting it right, then there is certainly a little light shining on the CSA's executives today.
