VAUGHAN, August 26, 2013 --The 2013 Ontario Cup had its Semi-Finals decided over the weekend, and many spectators were treated to a first-class display of skill that made for entertaining matches. The Ontario Cup Finals are now set, and will be played over the September 7-8, and September 14-15 weekends at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
The Masters/Classics Provincial Championships also had their Semi-Finals this weekend, with their Finals scheduled for the same weekend in September.
Below are reports on all the games that took place over the Semi-Final weekend.
Under 13 Boys – Esther Shiner Stadium, North York Esther Shiner Stadium in North York welcomed the first of its eight Semi-Finals in a game that featured the
Vaughan Battlecats and the
Brampton Blast White. The game got off to a quick start, with a near goal for Brampton within the first minutes of the game. The first goal of the game was scored in the 15
th minute when Bradley Ogbevuon took a nice straight shot that angled into the bottom left corner of the net. A couple more chances for Brampton and a few for Vaughan brought the game into the second half. Vaughan nearly made it onto the score sheet when a free kick hit the cross-bar. Brampton netted their second goal of the game in the 50
th minute, as Nathan Candelaria sent a short blast to the near right side of the post. For Vaughan it would be a game of “close but no cigar”, with the final score in Brampton’s favour 2-0 over Vaughan.
In the second Semi-Final of the Under 13 Boys Division, the
Markham Lightning met the
Toronto Mooredale Gold team. This game remained scoreless until the 73 minute of the game when Mooredale’s Jack McBain scored from the penalty spot. The floodgates opened after that and McBain scored his second in the 77
th minute. Mooredale’s Oliver Wales added the insurance goal two minutes later giving Mooredale a 3-0 lead. That would be the final score at the end of 90 minutes to send Toronto Mooredale Gold to the Finals against Brampton Blast White.
Under 13 Girls – Birchmount Stadium, Scarborough In the first Semi-Final of the Under 13 Girls Division,
Stoney Creek Battalion faced off against
Burlington Bayhawks. The only goal of the game came at the 14 minute mark when Stoney Creek took the ball down the left wing and crossed it in front of the net where Emma Davies finished. Burlington was unable to counter resulting in the win for Stoney Creek. Stoney Creek had defeated Burlington in two previous league games to continue the win streak. The Battalion will now advance to the Ontario Cup Finals.
The second Semi-Final featured a team from the east and a team from the west. The
Ottawa South United 2000 Force Black and the
Windsor Eastside Kickers met in the middle at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough on August 24. A lone goal by Ottawa South United sends the team to the Cup Finals in September. The goal came at the 21
st minute by Emily Amano who broke away and laced the ball into the corner of the net. Ottawa South United will meet Stoney Creek Battalion in the Finals at Civic Stadium in Oshawa on September 14.
Under 14 Boys – Civic Stadium, Oshawa In the first Semi-Final of the weekend at Civic Stadium, the
Vaughan Azzurri 99 took on the
Whitby Iroquois 99AM in the Under 14 Boys Division. Forty minutes of play passed in the first half with neither team able to find the back of the net. The next forty minutes were a bit more intense, but the result was the same. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. In Kicks from the Penalty Mark, Whitby outscored Vaughan 6-5 to advance to the Cup Finals.
The second Semi-Final in the Under 14 Boys Division was much the same as the first.
North London Elite 99 matched up against the
Ajax FC 99B Red team. After 80 minutes of scoreless soccer, the game went to Kicks from the Penalty Mark for a decision. In the end, North London Elite defeated Ajax 4-3 in Kicks from the Penalty Mark. North London Elite will face Whitby Iroquois in the Finals on September 7 at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
Under 14 Girls – Hershey Centre, Mississauga Kicking off the weekend at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga was the Under 14 Girls
Erin Mills Eagles vs.
Kitchener Spirit. Both teams in the OYSL, they were in it to win it – looking for a berth in the Ontario Cup Finals. Each team scoring a goal apiece, one for Erin Mills’ Emily Simmons and one for Kitchener Spirit’s McKenna Rice, the game would end in a stalemate 1 – 1. The result would need to be decided in Kicks from the Penalty Mark, which Kitchener easily took control of, winning the game 4 – 1 on Kicks from the Penalty Mark.
Facing off in the second Under 14 Girls Semi Final were
Hamilton Saltfleet Explosion and North
London Galaxy. Saltfleet, first in the OYSL, came in with the upper hand in terms of standings. But what North London lacked in stats it made up for in play. Both teams got on the scoreboard with two goals apiece, Saltfleet’s Gabrielle Paupst scoring two goals, and North London’s Claire Larose and Courtney McCabe scoring a goal each. The score at the end of 90 minutes was tied at two, bringing the game into Kicks from the Penalty Mark. At the end of the kicks, Saltfleet would leave the field winners, winning the game 4 – 2 on Kicks.
Under 15 Boys Tier 1 – Esther Shiner Stadium, North York The first Semi-Final in the Under 15 Boys Tier 1 Division played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York featured the
North London Elite and the
Brampton East Rams. Although both teams battled back and forth, neither team was able to capitalize to put the ball past the keepers. A scoreless draw sent the game to Kicks from the Penalty Mark to determine a winner. Six shots later, Brampton East was declared the winner outscoring North London 6-5.
In the second Under 15 Boys Tier 1 Semi-Final at Esther Shiner Stadium, the
North Mississauga Panthers played the
Woodbridge Strikers. An early goal by Woodbridge Strikers’ Milano Dicianna just five minutes into the game gave the Strikers the advantage. Although North Mississauga had some chances to equalize, it was not until the 83
rd minute of the game that Brandon Logan took a low shot from six yards out that found the back of the net, to put the North Mississauga team on the scoreboard. Neither team was able to score in the remaining few minutes, so the game went to Kicks from the Penalty Mark for a decision. In Kicks, North Mississauga defeated Woodbridge 4-2 to move on to the Cup Final against the Brampton East Rams on September 15 at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
Under 15 Boys Tier 2 – Hershey Centre, Mississauga The first Under 15 Boys Tier 2 Semi-Final matched the
Weston Wolves against the
Vaughan Azzurri. Both teams on the hunt for a place in the Final, they were ready to give it their all. Weston came out of the gates quickly, with a three goal blitz in the first ten minutes of the game. Scored by Tory Dryden, Nicholas Campoli, and Junior Lonigro, the score quickly jumped in the Wolves’ favour. Vaughan answered in the 13
th minute with a goal scored by Tariq Nelson. Vaughan would also score the next goal, narrowing the lead to one, on a goal scored by Kwabena Owusu. But Weston had another blitz coming, with three more goals scored in the final 20 minutes of the game (Nicholas Campoli (2), Tiron Dryden). Weston walked away with this game, the final score at 6 – 2 over Vaughan.
The
Thunder Bay Chill and
Ancaster Titans faced off in the second Semi-Final of the Under 15 Boys Tier 2 Division. Thunder Bay took the lead early in the game, as Anthony Valente scored in the 16
th minute. A bobbled rebound he carried past the keeper, he easily tapped the ball into the open net. The second half saw good pressure from the Ancaster squad, pushing to find their equalizer. But it would be Thunder Bay that scored again, this time Evan Sawula in the 61
st minute. Sawula’s goal solidified the lead, which Thunder Bay carried until the end of the game, winning the match 2-0 over Ancaster. T-Bay, book your plane tickets, you’re going to the Finals!
Under 15 Girls – Civic Stadium, Oshawa In the first Semi-Final of the Under 15 Girls Division, the
North Mississauga Panthers took on the
Burlington Bayhawks. Both sides came out firing as the game went end to end in the first half. North Mississauga’s Tracy Pizzaro-Steffler would open up the scoring in the 11
th minute to give her side a 1-0 lead. Burlington’s Lauren Raimondo would respond just minutes later with a goal in the 13
th minute to equalize the contest. Building momentum, Burlington would add another goal in the 18
th minute by Meghan Scott, giving her team a 2-1 lead going into half time. Although both squads exchanged chances in the second half, the score would remain 2-1, sending Burlington to the Ontario Cup Finals on September 14 at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
The second Semi-Final in the Under 15 Girls Division featured the
Darlington Fusion and the
Pickering Power Green 1998. These teams were evenly matched through the first half of play. Both squads would exchange chances; however, the game was deadlocked at 0-0 going into half time. The goals started to come in the second half, starting with Pickering’s Aaliyah Peterson in the 47
th minute. Pickering would take the momentum from the first goal and add a second goal by Amanda Wells in the 58
th minute. Darlington would fight back and were able to cut the deficit in half when Erin Dicaire was able to find the back of the net in the 73
rd minute. However, that was all that Darlington could muster as they would eventually fall to Pickering by a score of 2-1. Pickering will face Burlington in the Cup Finals in mid-September.
Under 16 Boys Tier 1 – Hershey Centre, Mississauga The first Semi-Final in the Under 16 Boys Tier 1 Division included the
Kitchener U16 A and
Vaughan Azzurri. Vaughan made their presence known very early on, their first goal scored by Steve Kloutsouniotis within 4 minutes of kickoff. The score remained close for a good two-thirds of the game, until Vaughan dropped the hammer, scoring three more goals. Kloutsouniotis scored in the 67
th minute (his second goal of the game), followed by Kamal Miller in the 85
th minute and Troy Lindsay in the 89
th minute. Four goals later, it was Vaughan Azzurri named victor over the Kitchener U16 A.
Mississauga Dixie Black and the
Ottawa South United Force faced off in the second Semi-Final of the Under 16 Boys Tier 1 Division. Getting on the scoreboard early, Ottawa’s Dante Cobisa scored in the 4
th minute of play. As Dixie pushed for a goal in the first half, Ottawa kept their cool and their lead into the second half. The second half saw much of the same back and forth possession, with a few chances never materializing, until the 83
rd minute, when Ottawa’s Dante Cobisa netted another goal, making the score 2-0. Dixie’s Ben Jackson answered shortly after with a goal in the 86
th minute, but it would not be enough. Ottawa won the match 2-1 over Dixie.
Under 16 Boys Tier 2 – Hershey Centre, Mississauga Hershey Centre’s first Semi Final of the day on Sunday matched the
Kleinburg Nobleton Blue against the
Toronto High Park FC. The pressure was on, as both teams came out of the gates seeking a place in the Ontario Cup Finals. The final score was 1-1, with goals that were scored 15 seconds apart (in the 12
th minute of the game). On the board first was Kleinburg Nicolas Cadisa, quickly answered by Che Doucette of Toronto High Park. The score stayed at 1-1 for the remaining 90 minutes, bringing the final decision to Kicks from the Penalty Mark. As epic as the two goals in 15 seconds was, the Kicks turned out to be even more so, a combined 23 kicks between the teams. The final score was 12-11 for Toronto High Park FC on Kicks from the Penalty Mark.
The second Semi Final of the Under 16 Boys Tier 2 Division featured the
Mississauga Falcons and
Barrie 97. Both teams tight defensively, this game would prove to be a tactical challenge for both sides. Both teams were strategically prepared, and kept their mistakes to a minimum to prevent scoring opportunities. Defense was so tight on both sides, neither scored in regulation time, requiring the game to be settled in Kicks from the Penalty Mark. Another tight result, Mississauga squeaked by Barrie, winning the game 5-4 in Kicks.
Under 16 Girls – Terry Fox Athletic Facility, Ottawa In the first Semi-Final of the weekend at Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, the
Windsor Eastside Kickers 97 took on the
Darlington Fusion in the Under 16 Girls Division. Darlington came out flying and found the back of the net in just the 2
nd minute on a goal from Mikayla Morton. The Fusion kept the pedal down and Morton would extend their lead in the 15
th minute to 2-0. Windsor would settle in as the first half moved along, as Sydnye Gagner cut the deficit in half in the 29
th minute, leaving the score 2-1 at half time. In the second half, Darlington would put the game away as they scored three more goals in an 10 minute stretch: Madison Carruthers (61
st), Braedyn Tutton (69
th), and Brooke Muira (71
st). Darlington would take the contest 5-1, advancing to the Finals on September 7.
The second Semi-Final between Brampton Brams United Bandits and North Mississauga Panthers 97 was not played, and will be rescheduled for Monday, September 2 at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan.
Under 17 Boys Tier 1 – Birchmount Stadium, Scarborough Two of the top OYSL teams met in Scarborough for the first of two Under 17 Boys Tier 1 Semi-Finals – the
Brampton Blast and the
Ajax FC Red. Ajax took control of the game early on, until a palpable shift put Brampton in the driver’s seat. The first half, with its many chances, would end scoreless, causing some to wonder if this game may need to be settled in Kicks. The scoring drought ended early in the second half, when Brampton’s Lee Victor Massunda scored in the 52
nd minute. Sending the ball to the outside post, just beyond the keeper’s reach, making the score 1 – 0 . Shortly after, Brampton had a huge chance at a goal, if it weren’t for a brilliant header save by an Ajax defender. Brampton scored a second goal in the 70
th minute of the game, as Daniel Stewart received a cross from outside the box, heading it into the net. Brampton will move on to the Finals – winning the game 2 – 0 over Ajax FC.
The second Semi Final in the Under 17 Boys Tier 1 featured the
Mississauga Falcons and the
East York Pythons. Mississauga Falcons’ Keeper Andrew McCullogh handled the game well, recording a shut out for his team. And the Falcons had a great showing, taking command of this semi-final, and maintaining control throughout the whole game. Christian Dipastena scored for the Falcons in the 10
th minute, which was followed by a goal for Falcons John Rekiel in the 24
th minute. Going into the second half, Mississauga found the net again, with a header off a free kick by Mathieu Laurent in the 67
th minute. Repeat scorer John Rekiel created a bit of a streak, scoring two more goals in the second half. Winning the game 5-0, Mississauga Falcons secured their place in the Ontario Cup Finals.
Under 17 Boys Tier 2 – Terry Fox Athletic Facility, Ottawa The first Semi-Final in the Under 17 Boys Tier 2 Division featured two teams from the same city:
North Mississauga Panthers 96 Premier and
Mississauga Dixie Athletics Black. This game seemed to be an even contest in the opening minutes of the first half, but would become one sided as the game wore on. North Mississauga’s Bill Le would tally the first two goals of the game in the 23
rd and 35
th minutes. Aboudie Abouzid would add a third goal for North Mississauga just before halftime. In the second half the Panthers would add two more goals, Bevan Perera in the 60
th minute and Juan Buitrago in the 77
th minute, giving their team a 5-0 victory and a spot in the Ontario Cup Finals.
The second Semi-Final in the Under 17 Boys Tier 2 Division was a closer affair, being played between the
Thunder Bay Chill and
the Ajax FC 1996 Boys White. Both teams exchanged chances in the early minutes of play, but it was Ajax’s Mambe Awana who would strike first in the 15
th minute of the game. The game would continue to go back and forth, but the score stood 1-0 for Ajax at halftime. Ajax would double their lead early in the second half on a goal from Marc Miville. Although down two goals, Thunder Bay would continue to fight, and were finally rewarded in the 83
rd minute on a goal from Patrick Vanbellegham. Ajax, however, would keep their composure and put the game out of reach in the 89
th minute on a goal from Andrea Lamanna. With a 3-1 win, Ajax will move on to the Ontario Cup Finals in Oshawa in September.
Under 17 Girls – Terry Fox Athletic Facility, Ottawa In the first Semi-Final of the Under 17 Girls Division at Terry Fox in Ottawa, the
Oshawa Kicks Red Devils faced off against the
Erin Mills Fighting Eagles. Erin Mills came out with intensity and were rewarded early on a goal from Jackie Goulart. Oshawa would come right back minutes later with a goal of its own, but it was called back. Both sides would exchange chances as the game moved along, but neither were able to tally another goal. Erin Mills will move on to the Cup Finals at Civic Stadium in Oshawa with their 1-0 victory
The second Semi-Final in the Under 17 Girls Division was an intense affair throughout, right from the opening whistle.
Glen Shields FC 96 and
Burlington Bayhawks G96A were the teams facing each other, the same teams that clashed in the 2012 Under 16 Girls Ontario Cup Finals last September. Burlington looked to be the hungrier team in the first half, with Veronica Johnson putting her team ahead 1-0 in just the 2
nd minute. The Bayhawks would continue to pressure Glen Shields as the first half wore on, but were unable to add to their lead by halftime. The second half was quite the opposite of the first: Glen Shields came out looking like the better team, and would quickly equalize in the 50
th minute on a goal from Victoria Pickett. Glen Shields continued to create chances, but in the end were unable to break the tie. In Kicks from the Penalty Mark, it was Burlington who would survive 3-2 and move on to the Ontario Cup Finals on September 7.
Men – Civic Stadium, Oshawa The first Semi-Final of the Men’s Division featured two Ontario Soccer League provincial level teams:
Caledon FC and
PCC Mississauga. PCC Mississauga was a finalist in the 2012 Ontario Cup and was looking to get back to the Final game. Caledon FC, however, had different plans and it showed on the pitch. Caledon would tally their first goal in the 27
th minute by Diego Gonzalez. Caledon’s Christopher Simm would double the lead just before half time in the 41
st minute of play. Simm would come right back in the 63
rd minute to add to Caledon’s lead, marking his second goal of the match. Stavros Badunas would put the game out of reach in the 75
th minute, adding a fourth goal for Caledon. PCC Mississauga’s Gagan Natt would finally get his team on the board in the 79
th minute, but it was too little too late. Caledon FC will move on the Ontario Cup Finals scheduled for September 15 at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
The second Semi-Final in the Men’s Division was a more competitive contest.
London Marconi took on
Gloucester Celtic at Civic Stadium, and the matchup did not disappoint. Gloucester’s Bezick Evraire would find the back of the net first in the 11
th minute to give his side an early 1-0 lead. As the first half came towards the end, Evraire would add a second goal to give Gloucester a 2-0 lead at half time. London would pick up the pace in the second half, and would equalize the score in a span of just three minutes: Alex Blencowe (63
rd) and Mike Marcoccia (66
th). Just as it was looking like it might need penalties to decide the game, Gloucester would put the game away with a late goal from Justin Dasah. Gloucester Celtic will take on Caledon FC in the Ontario Cup Finals on September 15 at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
Women – Esther Shiner Stadium, North York In the first Women’s Ontaraio Cup Semi-Final, held at Esther Shiner Stadium on Sunday, August 25,
Scarborough GS United encountered the
Vaughan Azzurri. The only goal of the first half is credited to Scarborough’s Kristin Boujos who found the net as time was winding down in the half. Down a goal going into the second half, Vaughan pressured and was able to equalize with a goal by Colleen Beesley twelve minutes in. The tie game did not last long though as just five minutes later, Kayla DeSouza put GS United back on top. Then, Scarborough’s Kayla Moreno added a goal at the 72
nd minute. Vaughan did not give up however, and Laura Arduini gave her team hope with a goal at the 77
th minute. Nevertheless, Scarborough added two more insurance goals to put the game out of reach for Vaughan. The goals were scored by Sinead Brown at the 83
rd minute and Kayla Moreno (her second) at the 90
th minute. Scarborough GS United will now move on to the Cup Finals at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
The second Semi-Final of the Women’s division played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York featured the
Richmond Hill Raiders and the
Erin Mills Eagles. The first goal of the game was scored by Richmond Hill’s Jennifer MacDougall at the nine minute mark. A second goal for the Raiders by Andrea Raso gave the team a bit of comfort, but that only lasted a few minutes. Erin Mills responded with a goal by Laura Twidle, to make it a 2-1 game. It looked as though the game was going to end that way until Erin Mills tied it up at the 87
th minute with Laura Twidle’s second goal of the game. With Kicks from the Penalty Mark looming, Richmond Hill would not settle and Kira Borys pocketed the game winner in the 90
th minute to send her team to the Ontario Cup Finals against Scarborough GS United.
Masters – Birchmount Stadium, Scarborough The first match-up of the Masters Provincial Championships was
London Apollo versus
Woodbridge Italia TFCO Legends. The Semi-Final game was held at Birchmount Stadium on August 24. A scoreless 90 minutes of play resulted in the game going to Kicks from the Penalty Mark. The London Apollo team managed to oust the defending champions by outscoring Woodbridge Italia 3-2 in Kicks.
In the second Masters Provincial Championship game,
Ottawa Royals drew first blood against the
Scarborough GS Masters at the 15 minute mark. Abraham Osman is credited with the goal. Ottawa notched another at the 36
th minute when Dominic Rochon was able to find the back of the net. Scarborough GS responded however, with a goal of their own two minutes later by Ron Belfon. A defensive miscue in the 81
st minute resulted in another goal for Ottawa by Abraham Osman, notching his second goal of the game. Minutes later, Ottawa’s Roland Tiamuh broke away and chipped the ball over the GS keeper to pad the lead. A scramble in front of the net and a miscue by the keeper, gave GS Masters a chance to put the ball in the net at the 87
th minute. James Lewis is credited with the goal to bring GS within two. Nevertheless, Ottawa Royals would finish the game with a 4-2 win to send them to the Provincial Championships against London Apollo on September 8
th at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
Classics – Esther Shiner Stadium, North York In the first Classics Provincial Championship game of the day, defending champions
Rexdale Reunited Elites took on the
Ottawa Royals. Rexdale’s Jennifer Patterson struck first with a goal at the 28
th minute, and the Elites managed to hold the lead for the next 49 minutes. However, in the 77
th minute, Ottawa’s Julie Garneau-Fontaine slotted in the equalizer that would end up sending her team to Kicks from the Penalty Mark to decide the game. The Ottawa Royals then outscored the Rexdale ReUnited Elites 3-2 in Kicks from the Penalty Mark, which now puts the team in the Final on September 7.
In the second Classics Semi-Final at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York,
London Marcon Azzurri met the
Oak Ridges Lady Knights. The first goal of the game came late in the first half when a shot by Joelle Brewster deflected off an Oak Ridges defender and found the back of the net. Before the close of the half, another shot from London found the net. Miriam Bhamjee is credited with the goal. A determined Oak Ridges team came back to put two goals of their own in. Nadine Powell buried one at the 55 minute mark and Kristina Cleary notched one at the 65
th minute. With the game now tied, Yvette Wickert from London put her team up again with a long chip that just slipped in under the crossbar at the 70
th minute. With time running out, one last push by the Lady Knights resulted in Suzie Durbacz netting the equalizer for Oak Ridges in the 89
th minute, sending the game to Kicks from the Penalty Mark to be decided. In the end, London Marconi outscored Oak Ridges 5-4 on Kicks from the Penalty Mark to advance to the Final against Ottawa Royals at Civic Stadium in Oshawa.
Ontario Cup Finals are scheduled for Sept 7, 8 and Sept 14, 15 at Civic Stadium in Oshawa. For full results to the Semi- Final Round visit the
