CANADA 2015: FIFA Women's World Cup visits continue across Canada

15 August 2013

FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 site visits have taken place this week across Canada, with stops in four of the six Canadian cities from 12-17 August 2013.

"It is wonderful to have our FIFA counterparts in Canada as part of our site visits for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015," said National Organising Committee Chief Executive Officer Peter Montopoli. "This week has provided us with the opportunity to meet key stakeholders in the Official Host Cities across the country and discuss the progress made on the road to Canada 2015."
Through Thursday, the site visits have stopped in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Edmonton, with successive media opportunities in each city. Vancouver will be the last stop on the tour, with a media opportunity on Saturday 17 August at 12.00 noon at the Westin Vancouver.
"The FIFA Women's World Cup is a great platform to advance the women's game worldwide and in the host nation," said Tatjana Haenni, Deputy Director of Competitions for Women's Football. "As a multicultural country, Canada will welcome the world and prove to be a great host for the world's preeminent 24-team competition."
The tour has included visits to stadiums and facilities that will be used for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015.

Big guns quietened, challengers surge

The maiden season of USA’s National Women’s Soccer League is set for a thrilling climax, with the top four play-off participants determined last Wednesday. Western New York Flash, Portland Thorns FC and Sky Blue FC are confirmed alongside front-runners FC Kansas City in the semi-final line-up. However, the teams that will boast home ground advantage are no closer to being finalised following the weekend’s penultimate round. Kansas saw their ten-game streak ended by a lone strike from Boston Breakers striker Sydney Leroux, with the victors having parted company from coach Lisa Cole a week earlier. Western New York and Portland remain level on points in second after they played out a scoreless draw, as Canada goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc excelled for the latter. Sky Blue though were unable to take advantage as they shared a six-goal thriller against Chicago Red Stars, despite a high-quality double from midfielder Monica Ocampo who famously scored with a long-range strike for Mexico at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup™.
Top three: FC Kansas City (38 points), Western New York Flash, Portland Thorns, Sky Blue FC (all 35)
