23 January 2013

The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to announce a new multi-year primary partnership agreement with Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited that will have a significant impact on the continued development of the most widely played sport in Canada.

“The Canadian Soccer Association is pleased to partner with an iconic Canadian brand such as Canadian Tire,” said Peter Montopoli, Canadian Soccer Association General Secretary. “As the largest participatory sport in Canada, we look forward to joining forces with Canada’s largest sporting goods retailer to connect the Canadian soccer community– players, parents, coaches, referees, volunteers and fans – to continue the momentum for the growth of the beautiful game.”

“Our customers are passionate about sport and we are excited to work with the Canadian Soccer Association to share the love of the game with Canadians from coast-to-coast,” said Landon French, Vice President of Sport Partnerships for the Canadian Tire family of companies. “From kicking the ball around in the yard to competitive leagues, our stores, dealers and franchisees are committed to seeing the game grow because we believe sport is what brings Canadian communities and families together.”

As part of the new agreement, Sport Chek and Sports Experts, members of the Canadian Tire family of companies, become title sponsors of the Canadian Soccer Association National Championships, the umbrella tournament for Canada's premier amateur competitions. Through eight competitions held in four venues during the same week annually in October, the National Championships welcome more than 1,500 athletes from the senior level Challenge Trophy and Jubilee Trophy competitions down to the U-14 youth levels.

In addition, the Association will work closely with Canadian Tire and its network to create and support grassroots programming to encourage participation in the sport of soccer. These community based programs align with and complement Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities’ efforts to identify opportunities to assist children in need through sport and recreation.

Mark’s, another brand under the Canadian Tire Corporation umbrella, is also included in this sponsorship agreement.

The announcement was made as part of a larger press event organized on 23 January by the Canadian Tire Corporation and included a number of other major amateur sport organizations.
