Carlo DelMonte, one of Canada’s most successful coaches in the senior ranks (Canadian Club Championship with Club Italia and Hamilton Steelers in the 1980’s) direct his soccer energy to the women’s game and introduced the inaugural Mayor’s Cup in Vaughan in September 24, 2000. It was sponsorship by Corriere Canadese, GTA’s daily newspaper and featured four women’s recreational teams. That year the Mayor’s Cup raised $1,500.00 for “Caritas” a local charity that helped drug addicted youth.
In 2001, together with Vaughan bushiness entrepreneur Mario Cortellucci, Carlo formed “Salute to Soccer” a not-for-profit organization set up to offer fundraising opportunities for the Canadian Cancer Society through “Kick 4 Cancer”. From 2001 until 2008, the Mayor’s cup raised over $25,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Major Mackenzie unit in Vaughan.
For the Labour Day weekend this year at the Soccer Centre in Vaughan, the Mayor’s Cup will take on a new and exciting challenge. This women’s open recreational tournament will feature 16 teams from the GTA geography and Salute to Soccer together with the strong support of The Ontario Soccer Association have teamed up to invigorate the Mayor’s Cup. It has a tournament fundraising goal of $80,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Every player will be receiving a pledge form for contributions from their family and friends.
The long range goal of the tournament is to stimulate other communities across Canada to execute regional Mayor’s Cup and collectively raise over 1 million dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society. The dream is to build the Mayor’s Cup to a national level and execute the tournament in advance of the FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Canada in 2015.
