A FIFA delegation site visit to Canada this past week included a tour of Montréal and Moncton, two of six venues that will be used for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. The site visits included a tour of the stadiums in both cities as well as potential training venues in Montréal.For the group stage of Canada 2015, Montréal will host six matches, including Canada’s third and potentially decisive match before the knock-out phase. Montréal will also host one Round of 16 match, one Quarter-Final match, and one Semi-Final match.
Moncton, meanwhile, will host six group matches and one Round of 16 match.
“We were pleased to welcome FIFA to Canada in our combined preparations for this world-class event in 2015,” said Peter Montopoli, Chief Executive Officer for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. “The FIFA Women’s World Cup will provide all Canadians the chance to touch and feel a piece of the most exciting sport in the world.”
Earlier this month, the Qualifiers for the FIFA Women’s World Cup got underway in Malta and Lithuania, with the European group trimmed from 46 to 42 nations. Following last week’s UEFA Draw, the 42 nations will play 210 matches from September 2013 to November 2014.
The next Qualifiers will be played in May and June in Asia, with 16 teams divided into four groups in Bahrain, Bangladesh, Jordan and Palestine.
“With the Qualifiers now underway, all aspirations are firmly planted on Canada and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015,” said Montopoli. “We congratulate all the teams and women’s footballers from around the world in their effort to reach Canada 2015.”
The National Organising Committee for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 will again welcome FIFA for further site visits in August 2013.
FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014
Last week, a new landing page for the FIFA U-20 Women's World CupCanada 2014 was launched via FIFA.com. The page can be accessed through the "Tournaments" index on the FIFA.com homepage.Already this year, qualification matches on the road to Canada 2014 have begun, with details on the route laid out via the Qualifierstab on the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup landing page.
More details on the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 - including host cities and match schedule - will be announced in June of this year. Dates for the Canada 2014 competition are 5-24 August 2014.
Also launched on FIFA.com this past week, the landing page for the FIFA U-17 Women's World CupCosta Rica 2014 is now live. That competition runs 15 March to 5 April 2014.
Both the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup and FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup are held every two years. Next year, the U-20 competition will feature players born 1994 or later while the U-17 competition will feature players born 1997 or later.
Both competitions also feature 16 teams, with the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup serving as a stepping stone to the FIFA Women's World Cup. From the most recent four-year cycle, 53 footballers who represented their countries at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Germany 2010 made the jump one year later to the FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011.
Helland selected for The Soccer Hall of Fame
Janine Helland, a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup footballer and current member of the National Organising Committee for Canada 2015, has been selected for induction to the The Soccer Hall of Fame in Canada. Helland will become an honoured member this June 2013.Ms. Helland represented Canada at the FIFA Women's World Cup at Sweden 1995 and USA 1999. She served as Canada's captain at USA 1999.
Also a two-time winner of the Jubilee Trophy (national championship) and one-time winner of the Gladys Bean Trophy (national university championship), Ms. Helland was Canada Soccer's Player of the Year for 1997. Just last year, she was named to the All-Time Canada XI team as part of the Canadian Soccer Association's Centennial Celebrations.
FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015
The FIFA Women's World Cup is held every four years, with the next edition to be played in Canada in 2015. It marks the first major sporting event hosted in Canada from coast to coast, with matches to be played in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal and Moncton. The FIFA Women's World Cup will feature the 24 best women's football teams in the world.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 will be preceded one year earlier by the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, one of two FIFA women’s youth tournaments. The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup returns to Canada for the first time since 2002. The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 will feature 16 teams featuring players born 1994 or later.
The National Organising Committee for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 features Victor Montagliani (chair), Steven Reed, Janine Helland, Doug Redmond, Clare Rustad, Walter Sieber and Peter Montopoli.
