CONCACAF teams draw closer to Canada 2014 qualification

Two CONCACAF teams will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 on Friday. A third CONCACAF team will qualify on Sunday 19 January when the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship wraps up in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
The first two teams will qualify through Friday night’s semi-final matches, with Mexico facing Costa Rica in the first match and USA facing Trinidad and Tobago in the second match. The matches are all played at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
The two Friday winners will both qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 and advance to the CONCACAF final. The winner of Sunday’s match for third place will also qualify for Canada 2014.
So far, eight of the 16 spots for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 have been filled. After three more spots are filled by CONCACAF in the coming days, the last five spots will be filled by Africa (two), Oceania (one) and South America (two) over the next week. The Official Draw for the competition takes place on 1 March 2014.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 runs 5-24 August in Edmonton, Toronto, Montréal and Moncton. This marks the seventh edition of the biennial competition, with host Canada currently preparing for its sixth participation. The Canada 2014 edition will feature women’s footballers born 1994 or later.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Angerer, Heynckes and Neid triumph at FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013
Cristiano Ronaldo has been named the best player in the world for the second time after 2008 by carrying off the FIFA Ballon d’Or award, while German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer has claimed her first women’s prize. Jupp Heynckes, the former coach of Bayern Munich, and Germany’s women’s national team coach Silvia Neid have taken home the FIFA World Coach of the Year awards for men’s and women’s football respectively.
The award winners, who were voted for by national team coaches and captains as well as by the international media representatives selected by FIFA and French football magazine France Football, were announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony at the Kongresshaus in Zurich today (13 January 2014). The entire voting process was supervised and monitored by PricewaterhouseCoopers Switzerland (PwC).

National Organising Committee Planning Sessions in Ottawa
The National Organising Committee for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 and FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 held National Planning Sessions in Ottawa this week from 13-15 January. The three days of meetings brought together National Organising Committee staff and Venue General Managers from the Official Host Cities.
With the venue teams starting to take shape, this series of meetings discussed the next steps as the National Organising Committee continues to build momentum towards the two competitions, starting with the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 which will run later this year from 5-25 August.
The next milestone for the competition will be the Official Draw, which is 1 March 2014 in Montréal at the historic Le Windsor hotel.
Of note, the first day of the National Planning Session included executive directors from Canada Soccer’s 12 member associations of provinces and territories. The executive directors were already in Ottawa for the three-day FIFA MA Grassroots Administration and Management Course which ran 10-12 January 2014.
National Women’s Soccer League holds annual college draft
The National Women’s Soccer League will hold its annual NWSL College Draft on Friday 17 January in Philadelphia, PA. The draft will consist of 36 selections made over four rounds by the nine member clubs.
Ahead of draft day, the Washington Spirit hold the first-overall pick while the expansion Houston Dash hold the second pick. Teams can trade their draft picks, hence the reason the Chicago Red Stars hold both the third and fourth selections in the draft.
In recent weeks, the NWSL has announced its 2014 allocation list of American, Canadian and Mexican players. The league also held its expansion draft for the Houston Dash. Clubs have also made trades and signed international players for the upcoming serason, with stars such as Erin McLeod (Houston Dash) and Karina LeBlanc (Chicago Red Stars) joining new teams via trades and other stars like Nadine Angerer (Portland Thorns) and Kim Little (Seattle Reign) joining the league via international signings.

Canada W17 heads to Florida in World Cup tune-up
With the countdown on to the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Canada’s Women’s U-17 Team is beginning its final preparations in the Florida sunshine.
U-17 coach Bev Priestman has brought 29 players to Bradenton for a camp that will go from Thursday 16 January until 28 January and see the team train, keep up on their school studies, and play in a game against the IMG Academy.

FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 Ticket Sales and Official Draw
Venue pack tickets for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 are now on sale. Purchasers of venue packs will receive price discounts of up to 20 per cent over prices of individual match tickets.
Of note, purchased venue packs in host cities that will also be part of the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™ will give purchasers an opt-in opportunity to be placed on a priority list for venue packs to the 2015 competition in the same official host city.
As of 1 March 2014, fans will know in which cities teams will participate for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 group stage. The competition’s Official Draw for all 16 teams will take place on 1 March in Montréal at the historic Le Windsor Hotel.
FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™
The FIFA Women's World Cup is held every four years, with the next edition to be played in Canada in 2015. It marks the first major sporting event hosted in Canada from coast to coast, with matches to be played in Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal and Moncton. The FIFA Women's World Cup will feature the 24 best women's football teams in the world.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ will be preceded one year earlier by the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, one of two FIFA women’s youth tournaments. The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup returns to Canada for the first time since 2002. The FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 will feature 16 teams featuring players born 1994 or later.
